Erotic Red : About the Site

Erotic Red is the long-dreamt-of project of Furry Girl, who maintains the site and appears as its first model, as well as operating her first adult site, FurryGirl.com, and the herbivorous VegPorn.com and TheSensualVegan.com. She currently resides in Seattle and is madly in love with sex, reading, travel, cooking, and her cat.

I, Furry Girl, had been scheming up this site for nearly 3 years before it opened. Not long after opening my first site in January of 2003, I got the wacky idea that I wanted to feature period porn as apart of a well-rounded portrayal of myself. Alas, almost every single adult site biller (the ones who handle credit card processing) are quick to shoot down bloody content, even natural, non-violent, pussy-sourced menstrual fluid. The nerve! I shot a few photo sets and videos, but didn't have any place to put them.

The project sat on my back burner for quite a while, until summer of 2005, when I decided to finally work on opening Erotic Red. Since it would be too difficult to keep up with a demand for regular photos from myself, and because a I wanted to provide other models with a place to showcase their forbidden flows, I put out a casting call. I found a small group of amazing people who echoed my passion for periods, and we all got started making new porn and writing things for the site.

Things were just about ready in September of 2005, so I emailed Verotel, a small adult biller being used by a number of menstruation sites. I was shocked to get the reply that upon looking at Erotic Red, Verotel had decided to cease all period processing and kick off existing clients like Bloody Trixie. How could menstruation truly be the most vile and disgusting thing that a pornographer had ever cooked up? Why were adult sites that arguably promote rape and violence against women allowed to continue to operate, but a handful of bleedy models were "too extreme"? It didn't make any sense.

Menstruation is a dirty secret that the porn industry hides and never talks about, as though the mere mention of red flow will cause the gods to strike us down with lightening. Even with the knowledge that an obscenity prosecution could be just around the corner, I stand firm in believing that Erotic Red is an important site to open- especially in a time when we're in a sexually repressive environment in the US.

I had been searching for a good artist to do some illustrations for Erotic Red when I stumbled on two cool pieces by C. Road in $pread Magazine. After looking at her cool site, I was in love, and thankfully, she was interested in the project. She did the bleedy "mascot" girl, as well as the menstrual product images. Here's a snippet from her:

"Cristy c. Road is an illustrator who's been making illustrations [for her own zines, political organizations, and bands in and out of the punk subculture] since she was 14. Her drawings capture the beauty of people who defy traditional beauty standards. Whether she’s portraying the dystopian future or quiet moments of friendship, her work sticks in your head. On her website she says:

'I contribute work to ideas I vouch for and bands I dance to. Sometimes, I spend too much time thinking of the role of art in social change. One day, I decided illustration could take form of a weapon to dismiss exclusion. Then, I decided it could manifest into a tool that presents ideas in accessible and beautiful ways. In the end, I don’t think making some drawings or saying the right words makes us immune to being the oppressor..., Through some drawings, I’m trying to make imperfections shine.' "
